Buckle Up Northern NJ

The New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety is proud to announce an innovative program designed to not only enhance the enforcement of motor vehicle laws, but to educate young drivers about staying safe behind the wheel.

Traffic crashes are the leading cause of death for teens, with drivers more likely to be involved in a crash during their first 12-24 months behind the wheel. Clearly, teen drivers are at risk, and the recent tragedies in New Jersey involving young drivers reinforce the need for initiatives such as this one.
For the period 1996-2006, an average of 114 young drivers (ages 15-20) were involved
in fatal motor vehicle crashes in New Jersey each year.

Factors that contribute to crashes involving young drivers include:
• Driver inexperience
• Risk taking
• Alcohol and drug use
• Non use of seat belts
• Distractions

The theme for the educational component of the campaign is “Don’t Drive Stupid” which focuses on seat belt use, speed, alcohol and other dangerous behaviors. Talking points have been developed that can be used during morning announcements and at school assemblies or sporting events. The information
can also be used as a public service announcement on a school-based television or radio station.
