How to make your home safe for your children

As we head back in our homes this fall be sure it is a “SAFE HAVEN” for your children.

Look at the Kitchen, Bathroom,Living Room and Bedroom with a critical eye. Review the recommendations from the experts on this on the attched brochure.

Kitchen

  • Cook with pots and pans on back burners. Turn pot handles to the back of the stove.
  • Keep matches and lighters away from kids.
  • Lock up cleaners and other poisons.
  • Keep emergency numbers near the phone.

Bathroom

  • Watch young kids at all times. Never leave them alone.
  • Keep the hot-water heater at 120 degrees or lower. If you rent, ask your landlord to do it.
  • Keep first-aid supplies, vitamins and medicine away from kids. Lock drawers and cabinets.

Bedroom

  • Take all toys, pillows, and extra sheets and blankets out of your baby’s crib.
  • Tie up blind cords and window curtains.
  • Keep small items away from kids so they can’t choke on them.
  • Make sure the space between crib slats is smaller than a soda can.
  • Make sure the crib’s corner posts are the same height as the end panels.

Living Room

  • Buy furniture wall straps to attach heavy pieces, like bookcases and your TV, to the walls.
  • Tie up loose electrical cords.
  • Don’t let kids jump on furniture.
  • Put covers on electrical outlets.

Home safety devices such as cabinet locks, smoke alarms, furniture wall straps and outlet covers can be purchased at home stores and baby stores.
